The myth of the resilient child is a lie unfaithful spouses tell to shelter themselves from the pain their children suffer. This lie is never told for the benefit of the children.
The lie starts with this myth and quickly grows in the direction of the other major victim--the faithful spouse. The cheater claims the children will grow up happy and well adjusted if only the abandoned spouse will cooperate peacefully with the divorce and shelter the children from all disapproval of the divorce.
Judges and attorneys love these lies as well because it shelters them from the guilt of getting rich beating up the widows of adultery and divorce and destroying the families of little children for money.
But, this does nothing to help the children. Nor does it do anything to reduce the suicide rates and depression that children suffer when the secure foundation of family love is destroyed.
The best suicide prevention is the saving of marriages.

There is one correlation that is strong across all cultures and that is the correlation between divorce rates and suicide rates. Often people underestimate the pain that unfaithfulness can cause the faithful spouse not to mention the children.
